EDIH-EBE Deep Dive: Digital Solutions on PV in the Built Environment

In this session, Prof. Dr. Ir. Michael Daenen and Prof. Dr. Patrizio Manganiello will explore how digital technologies are improving the performance and reliability of solar energy systems in buildings and urban environments.

The session will introduce the E-yield framework, a digital tool that predicts the short- and long-term energy yield of solar installations. The speakers will then explain how digital twins – virtual models of real solar systems – can be used to continuously monitor and optimize performance throughout a system’s lifetime. By leveraging these digital twins, operators can enhance operations and maintenance (O&M) activities: detecting issues early, reducing downtime, and improving overall system efficiency.

In addition, the session will show how combining digital mission profiles (data describing how systems are used over time) with PV module design helps predict long-term performance and degradation. Finally, the importance of designing for reliability from the start will be highlighted, ensuring that solar technologies remain efficient and durable in the built environment over the years.

Practical details

This Deep Dive session takes place within the framework of the European EDIH-EBE project. EDIH-EBE offers SMEs and medium-sized companies access to expertise, data and test facilities around energy, digitalisation and built environment. In this session, we offer you a combination of an expert panel and a demonstration of the possible technologies to make heat grids smarter.

Participants of the deep dive are also warmly welcome to join the kick-off event of IN2PV.

IN2PV (Integrated Innovations in Photovoltaics) focuses on the development and demonstration of innovative solar panel applications, such as integrated PV in façades, carports, greenhouses, and agricultural applications (agrivoltaics). At Thor Park in Genk, several demonstrators are being built, offering companies the opportunity to contribute to the design, implementation, and testing. There is also investment in scaling up the production of advanced solar cells such as tandem cells and thin-film technology.
